Caribbean Pride canoe wins Haulover to Boom Race

Written by BCAnoe!

Chris Guydis, Jermaine Sanchez and Justin Sanchez of the Caribbean Pride team proved they are ready for the annual Ruta Maya River Challenge which starts March 5 by winning the last of the preliminary races organized by the Belize Canoe Association, first ever Haulover to Burrell Boom race held on Saturday, February 20.

Guydis and the Sanchez boys from Flowers Bank paddled the Caribbean Pride canoe, sponsored by Citrus Products of Belize Limited, from the Haulover Bridge 12 miles against the current past the Burrell Boom bridge to the tourism village beside the Black Orchid Resort in one hour 59 minutes and 55 seconds to win first place in the elite men’s division.

The Cruise solutions team had to set midshipman Henner Cruz ashore, but his teammates Jerry Rhaburn and Efrain Cruz still had the muscle to out-paddle the six-time Ruta Maya champs Daniel Cruz and Amado Lopez in Belize Bank canoe to win the sprint for second place in two hours three minutes and 18 seconds. Cruz and Lopez were without Texas Water Safari veteran Armin Lopez, but their new teammate Erwin Cruz helped them finish a second later to claim third prize.
