Flowers Bank Festival 2013: Race Results

Written by BCAnoe!

A highlight of the Flowers Bank Festival was a canoe race from Flowers Bank to Bermudian Landing Bridge and back to Flowers Bank Village, which was held on Saturday, June 1st, 2013. Six canoes participated in five different categories. The Festival paid tribute to the historic 1797 Public Meeting in which the votes of fourteen men referred to as the “Flowers Bank 14,” were decisive in the decision to stay and defend the settlement in what became the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

The day turned out well for racing as compared to last year’s – when it rained all day. The race got started just before 2pm in route to the Bermudian Landing Bridge, but shortly after, team “Watt A Ting” (John Searle, Michael Searle, and Francis Codd) sponsored by Sea Sports Belize had to come ashore to repair a broken seat before they could continue on. Nonetheless, they repaired the seat and off they went. They had a lot of catching up to do!

Written by BCAnoe!

Race day turned out very much unexpected for all the paddlers who were anticipating another hot day. However, the day turned out excellent for paddling and was a great race day. This year’s SMART River Challenge at the National Agriculture and Trade Show was held on May 4th, 2013 and fifteen teams participated in six categories; the only category missing was the Female!

Two categories only had one competitor each; these were the Juniors and Masters. Is it coincidental? I wonder! The Juniors Team, who is the “Black Orchid Runners” comprised of Jeffery Seguro, Martin Gideon and Matthew Mask was sponsored by the Black Orchid Resort in Burrell Boom finished in 10th overall with a time of 2:35:59. Not too far behind were Jerry Wilken, Stanley Bailey and Joe Seguro in the “Grumpy Old Men” canoe sponsored by Caribbean Engineering. They finished just under 5 minutes later at 12th overall.
